George Batterson was born in 1906, which means he was too young for the first World War. In 1918, he would have only been 12; and he was too old for World War II. He would have been 36 years old, well past draft age in 1942.  

He served on the city council in New Milford from 1941 to 1947. Those were the war years when Teresa Martin was sending letters and packages, with the help of her junior high students, overseas to the men from New Milford serving in the Armed Forces.

George Batterson like Teresa Martin had a heart for the men who served and when he became Mayor of New Milford in 1947, he had low cost housing put up in New Milford which was known as, Batterson’s Barracks, which is Brookchester Apartments today, June 2011.

When asked about them, at age 100 in 2006 in an article in the Record newspaper he replied, “A lot of people didn’t like Batterson’s Barracks, but the boys were coming back from war, and I wanted to make sure they could afford to go there.”
